Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery is the ultimate technological advancement for performing a variety of minimally invasive gynecological procedures. The team at Vitality MDs uses the state-of-the-art da Vinci System, which is a sophisticated robotic platform.

Using da Vinci, your surgeon can now carry out minimally invasive surgery even for major surgical procedures. This is possible because using the da Vinci robot expands your surgeon’s already considerable capabilities, enabling them to carry out more precise and dexterous movements than they could ever achieve using just their hands.

Your surgeon at Vitality MDs has complete control over every action the robotic system makes. It’s more like an advanced extension of your surgeon’s brain and hands than anything else. The robot can’t think for itself, and it can’t be programmed either. The surgeon is in complete control at all times.

What happens during a robotic surgery procedure?

When they use the da Vinci System, your surgeon at Vitality MDs directs the robot to make several small incisions at the surgery site. Miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera pass through these small incisions.

The camera sends back magnified images to your surgeon, who is sitting at the da Vinci console. They’re able to view a high-resolution 3D image relayed by the camera, which they use to guide the robot.

At the console, your surgeon makes the movements with their own hands that they wish the robot to perform. The da Vinci System’s computer technologies then scale, filter, and seamlessly translate these movements for the robot to replicate.

What conditions can robotic surgery treat?

The number of conditions for which robotic surgery is a suitable option is continually increasing. At present, the Vitality MDs team uses robotic surgery for two key operations:

Hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. If you need a hysterectomy, you might well be able to have it done using a robot-assisted da Vinci procedure. The camera provides your surgeon with a high-definition 3D view of the inside of your uterus, enabling them to remove the tissue with great precision.

Hysterectomy with da Vinci robotic surgery causes fewer complications, less blood loss, and shorter hospital stays compared with open surgery and traditional laparoscopic surgery.

Myomectomy is a uterine-preserving surgery that removes fibroids but leaves the uterus intact. Fibroids are benign tumors that are common — about 25% of women develop fibroids at some point in their life. Although they often cause no symptoms, they can sometimes lead to excessive menstrual bleeding, pain, and infertility.

Your surgeon at Vitality MDs can use da Vinci® myomectomy surgery to remove fibroids with less blood loss and fewer postoperative fevers compared with open surgery.
