Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecologic care?

Gynecologic care focuses on the female reproductive system. It covers a wide range of issues, including pregnancy, childbirth, family planning, menstruation, hormone disorders and menopause treatment, sexually transmitted infections, and gynecologic disorders.

Women’s health care doctors can diagnose and treat problems leading to painful sexual intercourse, urinary tract infections, or leaky bladders. Vitality MDs also provides vaginal rejuvenation.

Who needs to see a gynecologist or women’s health doctor?

Females should schedule their first gynecology appointment when they first become sexually active or between the ages of 13 and 15.

Young teenagers won’t always require a pelvic exam at their first appointment, but they can receive information about their menstrual cycle and women’s health needs.

You should start getting annual women’s exams when you become sexually active or around the age of 21. If you have an abnormal Pap smear, pain in your vaginal area, or experience irregular periods, you may need to schedule more frequent appointments.

When should I schedule a gynecology appointment?

In addition to an annual exam, you should schedule a gynecology appointment if you  experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Painful urination or urgency
  • Painful or uncomfortable intercourse
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Pressure or pelvic pain
  • Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor
  • Changes to genitals, including lumps or sores

You should also book a consultation if you need contraceptives. Vitality MDs offers several options, including long-acting birth control like intrauterine devices (IUDs), which eliminate the need to take a pill.

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device your provider places inside your uterus. It helps prevent sperm from reaching eggs, so you can avoid becoming pregnant.

IUDs often last 3-10 years. If you’d like to become pregnant during that time, your doctor simply removes the device. The IUDs available at Vitality MDs include Bayer products – Mirena®, Kyleena®, and Skyla®.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation at Vitality MDs refers to a variety of procedures designed to improve the quality of life for women experiencing changes to their sex drive and genitalia as a result of aging or hormone fluctuations. Vaginal rejuvenation can help:

  • Restore lubrication
  • Improve vaginal laxity

What is the O-Shot®?

The medical team at Vitality MDs also offers the O-Shot for women looking for a noninvasive treatment to alleviate female sexual dysfunction.

The O-shot involves a process of taking a small amount of blood from your arm, transferring the blood to a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and then injecting the PRP into your vagina to stimulate blood flow and sexual sensation.

The caring and experienced team at Vitality MDs provides a wide range of gynecologic services to women over age 20. Schedule your appointment today by calling the practice or using the online booking feature.
