Urogynecology

Urogynecology involves pelvic floor disorders such as stress urinary incontinence or prolapse of the pelvic organs.

Pelvic floor disorders occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are stretched and weakened due to childbirth, obesity, heavy lifting or high impact sports. This weakening of the pelvic floor can result in leakage of urine or fecal matter, pain, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels, and pelvic organ prolapse (a condition where the bladder, uterus or rectum begins to “fall” into the vagina).

An increasing number of women are also seeking help for complications from vaginal mesh procedures, where the plastic net-like product used to help support the pelvic organs causes infection, erosion of vaginal tissue, or organ perforation.

Female pelvic pain is pain in the abdomen below the belly button. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, some acute (short-term) and some chronic. Pain in this area may be due to a problem with the reproductive organs or urinary system, or it may be musculo-skeletal. You should see a doctor if your pain is new, is strong enough to disrupt your daily activities, or has been worsening over time. Severe pelvic pain that comes on suddenly could be a medical emergency– get it checked out right away.
